MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT FOR NURSING EDUCATION IN PALLIATIVE CARE

Background: An interaction with the sick in palliative care requires well-educated nurses.

Objective: Evaluation of the selected topics in the course “Multimedia Support for Education of Interdisciplinary Team Members Focused on Palliative Care” which was developed as part of the project KEGA 022UKF-4/2015. Comparison of the results of eight auto tests on the basis of score evaluation and time data between the students with completed secondary healthcare education (healthcare professionals) and without secondary healthcare education (non-healthcare professionals).

Methods: The sample consisted of 115 students of Years 1 and 2 in the study field Nursing in the academic year 2016/2017. There were 83 healthcare professionals and 32 non-healthcare professionals. The sample consisted of 111 women and 4 men. The auto tests focused on the topics: Changes in mobility, Fatigue, Symptoms of the gastrointestinal system, Symptoms of the respiratory system, Relatives and volunteers, Spirituality, and Professional ethics in palliative care.

Results and discussion: The statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the topics: Changes in mobility (p = .034) and Symptoms of the gastrointestinal system (p = .001) in which non-healthcare professional had higher scores. In the evaluation related to time needed for completion, the statistically significant difference was found in the topic Fatigue (p = .033) in which the healthcare professionals had a higher score than the non-healthcare professionals.

Conclusion: The study results show minor differences in education of healthcare and non-healthcare professionals. We emphasise, however, the need to increase the quality of training in the area of palliative care with a perspective of lifelong education.
