Introduction: Patient safety education for nurses is very important in the context of providing quality and safe care. However, patient safety education tends to be hidden in nursing curricula and sociocultural aspects of safety are often neglected.
Objective: To identify how and to what extent patient safety is taught in undergraduate nursing curricula in the Czech Republic.
Methods: Data collection was conducted from November 2022 to January 2023. Online distribution was through a non-standardized questionnaire designed for the study with the support of expert educators. The sample consisted of 13 heads of nursing institutes/departments out of 16 respondents in the country. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the responses to the open-ended question.
Results: Patient safety is taught within all faculties. In five of them, it is taught as a separate subject, while the others teach it as part of other subjects, most often as part of Nursing Procedures. Qualitative content analysis resulted in 6 themes related to teaching patient safety.
Conclusion: It is not only important to increase its integration in patient safety education, but also to focus on sociocultural aspects of safety rather than instrumental performances.
